“You never change something by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
R. Buckminster Fuller

An Solas Sí is Gaeilge or Irish and refers to the will-o’-the-wisp light of forests, marshes, and swamps.

This Fairy Light is spoken of by many names, in many languages, across diverse faiths, engrained deeply in folklore and traditional legends of cultures around the world.

Throughout the ages the idea of fairy light has been used as a storytelling device illustrating how a false but comforting, deeply held belief, some vain hope or goal can easily lead us on as if spellbound, ending lost in misery, bitter ruin, even death.

This message is not to end-users who are largely immune to any string of words longer than 280 characters but is aimed at the scientists, experimentalists, technicians, artisans, artists, wordsmiths, and storytellers interested in devoting their lives to creating things, creating an environment, creating experiences that matter.

Of all the species that have existed on Earth, 99.9 per cent are now extinct. In fact, the one thing this planet earth does better than create life is extinguished it. When humankind’s collective talent for self-destruction, our stubborn refusal to adapt, fall in line with the earth’s natural indifference to our survival, we effectively become the architects of our own extinction.

Addressing climate change is not about fixing something, or making somebody else stop doing something, it is about our choice to challenge our assumptions, change our perspective cooperatively problem-solve, to model how best to adapt to a volatile, ever-changing world.

Λn Solas Sí is the inception cooperative and cultural liaison of the Ɍáithold Cooperative Union, a proposed federated union of cooperative communities based on democratic socialist principles.

We seek to create public-private cultural usability labs, a model of communication by demonstration, allowing people to experientially discover how such communities can work.

Through innovative storytelling, Λn Solas Sí will showcase models of society that place greater importance on unity by virtue of principles, above that of tribal impulses and the charisma of any one personality or any one native culture.

Through our efforts people will see how economic democracy furthers the goal of social democracy, with cooperatives working in concert, systemically filling every social niche from critical infrastructure everyone wants to work flawlessly but at no cost, to the myriad creative communities of practice that design manufacture plumbing and lighting fixtures, bake bread, brewing beer, grow and harvest fruits and vegetables.

Λn Solas Sí was chosen as a metaphor because our immersive, experiential performance environments are in large part intended to illuminate how many attributes of our world civilization are false lights leading us to destruction as individuals, cultures, as a species.

It also references the central, recurring vehicle of this performing arts troupe, that of technology indistinguishable from magic, with the first introduction to the public, a reinvention of shadowplay theatre, that though our art invokes a sense of otherworld presence that even if we told how magic works, the knowledge cannot rob us of awe and mystery.
